Avocados are a popular fruit that can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes, but they can be challenging to store properly to prevent browning. Here’s how to keep them fresh for longer
Avocados are a versatile fruit that complement many breakfast dishes, salads, or serve as an accompaniment to various mains.
However, to savour your avocados’ fresh flavour and brilliant colour, it’s crucial to understand proper storage techniques before they begin browning. Multiple proven approaches can extend your avocado’s freshness, regardless of whether it’s already ripened or freshly sliced.
A specialist has shared with Express.co.uk essential advice for preserving your avocado’s freshness and maintaining its quality for an extended duration. It comes as McDonald’s confirms ‘long awaited return’ is coming on September 10.

Vlatka lake, storage expert at Space Station explained: “Cut open the avocado and remove the pit. Immediately coat the flesh of one half with fresh lemon juice or olive oil – olive oil creates a barrier that helps prevent exposure to air. “Wrap the avocado half in clingfilm or put it in a special container for avocados and place in the fridge.”
You can also preserve ripe avocados in water to maintain their freshness without spending a single penny, reports the Express. The expert continued: “Another great method is to submerge your ripe avocado in water.
“Cut your avocado in half and fill a glass or plastic container with water. With the flesh-side down, place the avocado in the container, cover, and put it in the fridge.
“These methods will keep the avocado from turning brown for another two days or so.”
The storage expert advised: “If your avocado is already ripe but you aren’t planning on eating it quite yet, simply place the whole fruit in the refrigerator. This will keep it fresh for a few days.”
