‘A bra fitting exposed a huge mistake I’ve been making for the last ten years’

One fitting later and I finally understand what a supportive bra is meant to feel like

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been donning a 34C bra. It was the size I was fitted for in my early 20s, and I assumed it would always be my size – even though I’ve aged a decade and have definitely put on weight since then.

A couple of weeks ago, I popped into Boux Avenue’s Oxford Street store to treat myself to some new lingerie (I was in the mood for a new sexy set). While browsing, I was invited for a free bra fitting and almost declined, so confident that my trusty 34C was still the right fit.

But the assistant took one look at me and revealed the truth: I’m actually a 34D. According to Boux Avenue’s stats, I’m far from alone, with 81% of women still wearing the wrong bra size, which makes sense when you consider how many of us are still clinging to the size we were a decade ago (guilty as charged).

The difference was instant. Once I tried on the correct size, I realised how much better a bra is meant to feel. The straps didn’t dig in, the cups sat smoothly, and, most importantly, I felt supported.

I was told that women should schedule a bra fitting every six months to a year, as several factors can lead to a change in size. That includes gaining or losing a few pounds and working out more, as exercises that target your chest and back can have an impact on breast size.

The Mila set offers softness and sophistication with a blend of satin and delicate lace.

With my new size confirmed, I went back to my original plan: shopping. I gravitated toward the Mila Lace Balconette Bra in an elegant khaki green, and couldn’t resist picking up the matching knickers and suspender belt.

I’m also hoping to pick up an updated size of Boux Avenue’s Padded Plunge T-Shirt Bra (£25), which I highly recommend for seamless support and everyday wear. I have it in nude and it’s ideal for popping under white tops, although one shopper complained theirs had ‘dents that you could see through t-shirts.’

For something a little prettier but still practical, I’m also a big fan of Lemonade Dolls. The pieces are designed for real bodies, with sizes and styles to suit everyone – including fuller busts.

The bralettes are non-wired, which made me worry they wouldn’t provide much shape or support and might not be the right choice for some. But the bras offer just enough of a boost to give me cleavage, while still feeling comfortable and perky.

Bluebella is also an excellent choice for underwear, with a wide range of colours and designs available. I love this sheer wired bra (£39) with a bold pink hue and delicate embroidery.

Besides my recommendations for the best bras to shop, I’d also suggest booking a bra fitting ASAP. As well as Boux Avenue, there are other retailers including Marks and Spencer and Bravissimo that offer them for free, and finding your true size could completely transform the way your lingerie feels – and give you an excuse to treat yourself to some new pieces that actually fit.
