Experts have warned that stress can damage your skin and more than half of people in the Uk say they have seen the symptoms. Stress can trigger the release of hormones that can increase oil production, leading to breakouts and inflammation. It can also disrupt the skin’s barrier function, making it more prone to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity.

Health experts say that, over time, stress can accelerate the aging process, contributing to wrinkles and dullness. Aesthetician Katie Onyejekwe said there are three tips to reduce signs of stress on the skin. She said: “Sleep is integral to your skin’s health. In fact, a 2020 study found a significant reduction in skin hydration and elasticity after just one day of sleep deprivation. And while it can be difficult to get adequate sleep when you’re stressed, it’s exactly what your body (and skin needs).”

Katie added: “It is widely believed that elevated cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone) may trigger inflammatory responses in the skin which can compromise the skin barrier, making it more susceptible to redness, irritation, dryness and flare-ups of conditions like rosacea and eczema. To help support your skin during times of stress, keep your routine gentle and reparative. I recommend layering a ceramide-infused cream over a serum or essence packed with soothing ingredients such as cica, beta-glucan and panthenol to calm and reinforce stressed-out skin.”

Katie, a Perfectil Ambassador, said there are treatments that can help protect your skin, adding: “Red light therapy has been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits, soothing the skin and encouraging skin repair (this is why it’s often used after ‘heavy-duty’ clinic treatments) while supporting collagen production. Consistent use is key for best results, with most devices requiring you to use them daily or at least five days a week. Book in for regular sessions with a qualified skin professional for a more powerful treatment.”

She added: “By prioritising self-care, nourishing your body, and establishing a consistent routine, you can manage the visible impact of stress and maintain a healthy, radiant glow. Supporting your skin from the inside out is also crucial, with a supplement”
