241 people aboard the doomed Air India have been killed, the airline has confirmed. British man Vishwash Kumar Ramesh is the sole survivor of 230 passengers and 12 crew members, having escaped the Gatwick-bound Boeing 787-7 Dreamliner by ‘jumping’ from seat 11A.

The 40-year-old is now recovering in hospital alongside other injured Ahmedabad locals. He had been travelling with brother Ajay, who it is now known is dead.

In a statement posted to social media, Air India said it is working with authorities to figure out what happened. It reads: “Air India confirms that flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on 12 June 2025, was involved in an accident.

“The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew. The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off.

“The passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and 1 Canadian national. The survivor is a British national of Indian origin.

“Air India offers its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. Our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of all those affected, their families and loved ones.”

Amongst the dead are Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, a couple living in London. The pair had spoken of their “magical experience” in India in a gut-wrenching video posted shortly before the doomed flight.

On Tuesday, the Greenlaw-Meeks posted a video from a boutique hotel, The House of MG, in Ahmedabad, explaining how much they had enjoyed their trip. The Telegraph reports Fiongal said: “So it’s our last night in India and we have had a magical experience really, there have been some quite mind-blowing things that have happened.”

According to the newspaper, Fiongal appeared on ITV’s This Morning in January to chat about people’s auras and what they mean. The publication also reports a yoga retreat – the Wellness Foundry – in Lambeth and Ramsgate, Kent that’s run by the couple offers psychic readings, tarot, reiki and yoga.
