New survey reveals the most commonly misunderstood airport rules stumping Brits this summer – how many cause you confusion?
As millions of us Brits prepare for our summer holidays, absolutely no-one is looking forward to navigating the increasingly bewildering world of airport rules.
A new survey shows that – regardless of how many times we have visited the airport and been on a plane – almost all of us are still stumped by some of the airport and airline regulations.
Research by Vape Globe shows that up to 90% of Brits have been having trouble with some common flying rules. Packing regulations were frequently misunderstood, with two thirds (67%) thinking that taking your own food to the airport was illegal when it is in fact perfectly acceptable. In addition to this, 32% were also deeply confused by the liquid allowance in hand luggage, with a third not knowing the correct limit.
Other puzzling packing rules included how to correctly take vapes abroad. A hefty 80% of those surveyed incorrectly answered questions on vaping, with Brits still thinking that you can pack e-cigarettes in hold luggage. In fact, they must be taken through security in your on-board bags and sealed in a clear plastic bag. More shockingly, 10% of Brits thought vaping on the plane was legal, with up to one in five Millennials believing this to be true.
Staying on the topic of tobacco, 50% of us still think we can buy as many duty free cigarettes as we like, when there are in fact set limits per person. And one in 10 incorrectly believe that you can take lighters in hold luggage, however lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked bags.
Another baffling topic for Brits was the rules on leaving the airport. A sizeable 78% were frazzled by rules over leaving the building on a layover (when you briefly change planes on your way to your final destination). You can, in fact, leave and come back for the second leg of the journey. In addition to this, nearly 90% of Brits did not know that you can leave and re-enter the airport after check-in.

On the other end of the scale, Brits were most clued up on the correct time to check in (86%), the alcohol limits per person (93%), and boarding pass rules (88%).
Markus Lindblad, from Vape Globe, said: “Travelling abroad is so exciting, but clearly comes with some confusion for holidaymakers. The data clearly shows that Brits are a little in the dark on a number of topics including packing rules, liquid allowances, and particularly vapes.
“As a nicotine retailer, we often get asked about the various rules and restrictions on vapes, cigarettes and nicotine products in the airport, on the plane, and even once abroad on holiday. It’s a minefield! The best thing to do is pack alternative nicotine products so that you’re not getting into any trouble with airport security.”
