Gender reveal parties are becoming one of the biggest rising celebrations for couples in recent years – and now Aldi are helping expecting parents with their brand new product launch.

The beloved caterpillar cake is a true British classic when it comes to celebration cakes, and now they can be used for gender reveal parties as well as birthday celebrations.

Caterpillar cakes were initially created by M&S in the 90’s when they launched Colin the caterpillar, but competitor supermarkets have created their own over the years, including Aldi’s Cuthbert cake. And now the bargain supermarket have gone one step above and branched out into gender reveal cakes.

It appears there’s a demand for the cakes, as Aldi research found over 58% of millenials and 48% of Gen Z attending an average of three gender reveal parties in the last five years. The data also found that cake was the most popular method of revealing a baby’s gender with those aged between 18-24 choosing cake twice as much as any other gender reveal option such as balloons, confetti or fireworks.

The cake has been made as a nod to September being the most popular birth month, as data from the Office For National Statistics shows that births tend to peak in late September

The cakes feature either pink or blue icing and topped with chocolate beans, and parents could get their hands on a cake for free as part of a competition open to all expectant parents. It comes as hosting a gender reveal celebration is likely to come with a hefty cost attached.

In fact, almost half (42%) of those surveyed by Aldi expected the average gender reveal moment to set them back by anything between £100 and £500.

Luckily, Aldi is offering the Gender Reveal Cuthbert Cake for free via an easy-to-win competition and to be in with a chance of winning, shoppers just need to send an email detailing their full name, why they or a loved one would be the ideal recipient of this cake, address of their closest Aldi store and the gender of their baby to [email protected].

It comes as the chocolate treat, which was first stocked by Aldi in 2019, was voted by shoppers as their favourite product in a nationwide survey last year.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “We know how special gender reveal moments can be for expectant parents, so we wanted to offer something fun for shoppers to help mark the occasion. And what better way to do it than by transforming our popular Cuthbert Cake!”
