The actress fell at a Dubai restaurant earlier this year
Alison Steadman has shared that she’s “doing OK” after breaking her metatarsal in a fall. The Gavin and Stacey actress is back on her feet, nine months after the incident at a Dubai restaurant left her temporarily wheelchair-bound.
She recently stopped using a walking stick, as she revealed during an appearance on Lorraine : “I’m doing OK. I’m back on my feet after eight/ nine months. I’ve just stopped using a stick. I thought, ‘I’ve got to try.’ It was a concrete walkway, and I just landed on my foot and it broke the metatarsal bones. Me and David Beckham.”
The former England football captain famously suffered the same injury in April 2002, just before England’s World Cup campaign, but made a successful recovery in time for the tournament. Alison is also glad to be recovering well, especially with her 80th birthday coming up in August. The Here We Go star expressed surprise at nearing the milestone, but has no intention of retiring from acting.
She said: “I’m in shock myself, I don’t want to be 80. I want to stay 79. If I think of my grandmothers, they had a way of dressing that was suitable for them. The way we all dress [nowadays] is so different.”Alison added: “Now, I’m wearing trainers all the time, because of my foot, and they’ve got a little sparkle on them. I’m not going to retire.”
Earlier this year, Alison recounted how she had injured her hand and leg in an “absolutely horrible” fall in Dubai.
Speaking at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, she said: “There were beautiful seats laid out and a buffet. I went to get some pudding. I was walking along a concrete walkway that was not 100 per cent smooth.”
She continued: “I tripped and it felt like I went up in the air about 5ft and then just crashed down on concrete. It was absolutely horrible. I landed on this foot and this hand and was in absolute agony.”
Alison’s injuries were so severe medics thought she may have fallen from a camel. She added: “I said, ‘What camel? I didn’t fall off a camel!'”
