From today, customers will be able to ask “Alexa, talk Gen Z to me” to reveal one of 20 phrases which include the UK’s most popular Gen Z words

Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa is officially in its Gen Z era. Through working with Gen Zers of the UK, Amazon has brought some of the younger generation’s most popular jargon to Alexa’s vocabulary.

From today, customers will be able to ask “Alexa, talk Gen Z to me” to reveal one of 20 phrases which include the UK’s most popular Gen Z words as identified through new research carried out by Amazon. Customers will also receive a dictionary style definition of the term in-use.

The new update will help Brits who are struggling to keep up with modern day lingo, with ‘lowkey’ being revealed as the most popular Gen Z slang term, and ‘rizz’, ‘it’s giving’, ‘mid’ and ‘hot girl summer’ also all landing in the top 20.

Turning to non-Gen Z’ers, ‘genny lex’ came up as the most unknown and misinterpreted term, with a third admitting that ‘rizz’, a word that may have been picked up from a popular summer dating show, is the expression they’re most unfamiliar with.

The new feature is perfect for the older generation who are giving Gen Z the ‘ick’ with their ‘mid’ knowledge of the latest lingo, with over a third (35%) of Gen Z’ers claiming that they CRINGE when someone from an older generation uses slang incorrectly.

This comes in addition to over 4 out of 5 (83%) of Gen Z’ers stating that older generations often fail to understand their slang, and over half (56%) of the older generation revealing that they’d welcome assistance on understanding Gen Z terminology.

Amazon’s research also revealed that social media is the source of new slang with nearly two thirds (65%) of Gen Z’ers admitting that TikTok is their main inspiration for using these new terms and phrases.

“Alexa is ready to help with answers to everything, including keeping up to date with the very latest lingo.” said Meryem Tom, Amazon Alexa’s UK Country Manager. “Our research shows that there’s plenty of Brits out there who can’t quite keep up with Gen Z’s jargon and we hope that Alexa’s new feature will be a reliable source of knowledge for those who want to brush up on their Gen Z vocabulary.”
