Amazon unveiled its new Kindle Kids Edition, a version specifically for children, in 2019. The company said the new Kindle Kids Edition includes a protective case and a one-year free subscription to a special child-friendly version of its Kindle book store. The device also comes with a two-year “worry-free guarantee”, which means owners can replace the device any time during that period, free of charge, should it be lost or damaged.

With school set to kick off in the coming weeks, parents may be looking for a way to safely encourage their kids to read more, whether as part of school work or extracurricular activities, with some of the top titles in children’s literature. And right now, you can get this Amazon Kindle that’s specifically catered for kids for less, thanks to this limited-time deal.

The expansion to e-readers follows Amazon’s successful line of Kids Edition Fire tablets, which come with similar protective cases and access to child-friendly content through the company’s Fire For Kids Unlimited subscription service. Kindle e-readers remain one of Amazon’s most popular and well-known devices. They offer several weeks of battery life and access to thousands of books in one place.

The technology giant promises that the Kindle Kids Edition includes features to encourage children to build their reading and vocabulary skills. These include achievement badges for reaching reading goals, a Word Wise simple definition tool, and a Vocabulary Builder, which automatically adds looked-up words to a library and creates a dedicated flashcard of them for future review and learning.

Perfect for children between the ages of 3 and 12, this e-reader boasts a compact, lightweight design that allows for one-handed reading and is perfectly suited to smaller hands. With 16 GB of storage, this Kindle holds thousands of books from classic chapter books and graphic novel favourites. A single charge (via USB-C) can also last up to 6 weeks, meaning its an ideal addition to school bags or reading on the go.

Normally retailing for £114.99, this Kindles Kids is now up for grabs for the reduced price of £89.99 on Amazon, as well as from Argos and Very.

Parents who have picked up this gadget for their little ones can’t stop beaming about it. One shopper says: “The Amazon Kindle for Kids is hands down my best buy of the year! My children absolutely love it. They can take it anywhere—car journeys, holidays, even just out in the garden—and read comfortably without carrying heavy books around. The screen is clear and easy on the eyes, and I don’t have to worry about distractions since it’s made just for reading. The battery lasts for days, which is a huge bonus, and the free access to a huge library of books keeps them happily entertained and learning. I ended up buying a second one because they were both so into it—no more fighting over who gets to read next! It’s such a great way to encourage a love of reading. Highly recommended for any parent!”

Another customer gushes: “Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She loves the included case, whose design is beautiful. The Kindle itself downloads books easily when in range of the wifi, and the size is perfect for putting in her handbag (she’s been taking it everywhere!). She’s almost 10 and has picked it up easily enough and her younger sister (7) can use it too. We haven’t charged the battery yet and she started using it straight out of the box, so battery life seems good. It’s lightweight so doesn’t weigh down your hands, similar to weight of a smartphone. It comes with Amazon kids included for a period of time, which has meant she can download lots of books without me having to pay for any so far (she reads avidly). All in all a good little e-reader.”

And a third chimes in, saying: “I was stuck for a big Christmas present for my grandson. I’d got some Lego…and some books.., but I wanted something…better….. Then I saw this Kindle…specially for kids! My Kindle is, honestly, THE best thing I’ve ever bought. You can take it anywhere. You don’t need an electric connection, or the internet, or even your glasses! It’s not heavy to hold, it has its own light and you can keep a HUGE library on it without taking up space in your house. FAB! Now my grandson is exploring his, reading along with his bedtime story. And I’m hoping, when he gets older, he’ll love his as much as I do mine. And he LOVES the whale cover. Thank you so much.”
