An Amber Heat-Health Alert has been issued across England, including London, as forecasters warn of soaring temperatures and significant pressure on health and social care services.
The alert, in effect from midday today until 9am on Monday, 23 June , comes with a risk score of 12, indicating a medium impact but a high likelihood of occurrence. It follows a string of unusually warm days, with temperatures expected to climb above 30°C by Thursday afternoon, peaking at 33°C over the weekend — potentially marking the hottest day of the year so far.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns that “significant impacts are likely” across the NHS and other care providers, especially for older adults, those with chronic health conditions, and even some younger groups. The sustained heat could cause “a rise in deaths”, strain emergency services, and challenge care delivery in hospitals and homes where internal temperatures may exceed safe levels.
Indoor overheating is a particular concern for vulnerable Londoners living independently or in care settings, while issues such as medicine storage, workforce transport, and increased electricity demand could further complicate service delivery.
According to the Met Office, the heat will intensify throughout the week, with “tropical nights” possible in the capital — meaning temperatures may not fall below 20°C overnight, reducing relief for heat-sensitive individuals.
Londoners are advised to check in on vulnerable neighbours, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day. Travel services may be affected, and commuters should plan ahead for possible delays.
A heatwave is declared in the UK when temperatures exceed defined thresholds — between 25°C and 28°C depending on the region — for three consecutive days. London is expected to reach this benchmark by the weekend.
Forecast for London
Today (Thursday, 19 June)
London is experiencing a hot and sunny day, with temperatures peaking at 32°C and a low of 18°C overnight. Another dry and hot day is in store, with 30°C as the high and 19°C as the overnight low. Skies will feature some high-level cloud in the afternoon, especially from the west, but overall it will still be sunny. Winds will be light, and the day will remain dry throughout.
Saturday, 21 June
Saturday will likely be the hottest day of this stretch, with temperatures soaring to 33°C and cooling to 17°C overnight. The day will be largely sunny and settled, although there is a small chance of an isolated shower. High pressure dominates, so dry weather will continue for most.

Monday, 23 June
