There are several chocolate brands loved by sweet-toothed Brits including Cadbury, specifically Cadbury Dairy Milk and Galaxy. British chocolate is known to taste different to chocolate in the US and an American couple living in the UK sampled some.

Brianna Sky Morton and her partner moved from America to Britain and have been spending time trying classic British foods and sharing their thoughts on social media. They recently posted a video on TikTok comparing Cadbury Dairy Milk with Galaxy. The pair bought two large size bars of each chocolate and Brianna declared that they are “never going back” to Hershey’s, a popular chocolate in the US.

The American expats first tried the Cadbury Dairy Milk and it was clear that they enjoyed it.

Brianna said: “I can’t believe I used to like Hershey’s. Never again. I can’t go backwards.”

Her partner agreed that Cadbury tastes better than Hershey’s and moving onto the next chocolate, he revealed: “Now I’ve never tried a Galaxy bar.”

They took a bite but didn’t seem to like it as much as the Cadbury Dairy Milk. Brianna admitted that it reminded her of Hershey’s and her partner said it reminded him of Hershey’s chocolate with almond.

Brianna thought the same and remarked: “I’m sorry guys but your Galaxy tastes like our Hershey almond bar but creamier.”

The pair couldn’t get enough of the Cadbury chocolate and decided that it definitely wins over Galaxy.

More than 100 TikTok users commented on the video and some weren’t happy about the couple comparing Galaxy to Hershey’s.

One said: “Sorry but that’s an insult to Galaxy choc.” Another hit back: “Galaxy is the best. What are you talking about comparing it to your rotten tasting chocolate?”

A third claimed American chocolate tastes “like vomit, Galaxy does not.” Someone else shared their shock at the American foodies thinking Galaxy has an almond flavour: “You clearly shouldn’t be doing any kind of taste test if you think Galaxy tastes of almond. It absolutely doesn’t in any way shape or form.”

Others noted that Galaxy has a “rich”, “creamy” and “smoother texture” than Cadbury Dairy Milk.

There was a divide between the two chocolates between commenters but one passionate Cadbury fan declared: “Dairy Milk is the king of everyday British chocolate!”

Whitakers Chocolates has given an insight into the differences between American and British chocolate.

It says that American chocolate often has a higher sugar and lower cocoa content, giving it a sweeter, less cocoa-rich taste.

The company adds that chocolate makers in the US frequently use a longer method known as “conching,” which can result in a more grainy texture.

Whitakers further explains that the idea that American chocolate “tastes like vomit” is because some US chocolate recipes use butyric acid, a substance naturally found in milk products, which is also present in spoiled butter and vomit, so it might trigger a “sick” taste association.

The luxury chocolate business notes that some American chocolate manufacturers use butyric acid during production to extend the shelf life of the chocolate.
