In the one-minute video, Russ films himself with his partner sitting outside a fish and chip parlour where he opted for a battered haddock with chips, complete with tartare sauce. His partner went for a meat pie with thick gravy and chips.

After the pair had been served, Russ was shocked about the size of the fish, describing it as “massive”. He said: “It smelled really good… And its taste, dang! That was some good fish. It was a strong blend of flavours, but it was very satisfying and crispy. The haddock tasted amazing. The chips were nicely done, too.”

Full of compliments, it appeared Russ was well and truly bowled over by his first taste of the British delicacy. He dubbed his experience a generous nine out of 10 – but one sauce caught him completely off-guard.

That was his partner’s gravy. “My god, it was the best gravy I’d ever tasted in my life… It’s not an exaggeration,” he said. Gravy is not an uncommon sauce to dip chips into, but it’s more popular in northern towns and cities. Some people opt to drench their entire dish in the meaty condiment, while others prefer it on the side.

Typically associated with a roast dinner, gravy has pushed through the ranks in recent decades with fast-food giant KFC offering it as a side dish to customers.

Russ concluded his trip to Brighton with a Mr Whippy and a chocolate flake, which he gave a 10 out of 10.

Coming from the States, Russ’ videos focus on trying British delicacies, from the famous M&S sandwiches to Greggs pastries and other supermarket goodies. His latest video trying the fish and chips has accumulated 16.1k views at the time of publishing.

Similarly, in another story published by the Mirror, Russ tried Gregg’s cheese and onion bake, chicken bake, steak bake and the iconic sausage roll for the first time. Russ described its “nice, creamy filling” and hailed the “bread” for being “nice and flaky.” He said: “I really enjoyed that, it was decently filling,” giving it a solid seven out of 10.
