A group of Americans have shared their thoughts after visiting ‘big Tesco’ for the very first time – and there’s one thing that took them by surprise before they even set foot through the door

While on holiday abroad, it’s interesting to check out the local supermarket to compare the differences to back home. That’s exactly what a group of Americans decided to do when visiting the UK – and they couldn’t believe how Tesco compares to Walmart, Target, and Costco.

Taking to TikTok, user @kalanighosthunter shared his surprise over various items available in the UK supermarket – but there was one thing that stood out to him before he even stepped foot through its doors. Pushing a shopping trolley from side to side, he said: “I didn’t know the carts did that. That don’t do that in the US.”

In a vast majority of stores in America, the rear wheels on a shopping trolley are fixed while the front ones can turn 360 degrees – and this can sometimes make it difficult for shopping to manoeuvre around the aisles.

But this wasn’t the only thing to take them by surprise as seeing eggs on the shelves rather than in the fridge felt ‘wrong’ to them. He said: “Eggs on the shelf?”

They commented that Tesco is like a “ginormous Walmart” and has various UK items they’ve never seen before – such as strawberry Jammie Dodgers, Dubai-style pistachio Fox’s biscuits, and Tunnock’s Caramel wafer biscuits.

Speaking in the video, Kalan’s dad said: “I need a suitcase, they’ve got so much stuff here in the UK, I need to take some home.”

Commenting on the clip, one user said: “Your lad’s reaction when the trolley moves sideways.” Another user added: “Your dad seems to be embracing the culture.”

A third user said: “What he mean with the trolleys don’t do that.”

Another user said: “You found stuff I haven’t even found.”

One more user said: “You still got to do the Tesco meal deal with the Costa coffee drink and an ice cream as the snack.”

A final user added: “I hope you had a Club Card or that’s going to be expensive.”

It comes after Kalan compared fish and chips in the UK to what is served overseas in the US – leaving Brits in disbelief over the difference.

He explained how Captain D’s is the only place he could order a chippy in the landlocked state of Tennessee – but says he hasn’t been there in 15 years so didn’t know what to expect.

But when tucking into the dish, he couldn’t help but point out the stark differences, as he pulled some questionable faces with every bite.

He ended up ranking the US fish and chips a four out of 10 due to the type of fish they served, its overall taste, and its portion size.
