Arrest made after pedestrian killed in Old Kent Road crash

The driver of a car involved has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving

A driver has been arrested after a fatal crash in Bermondsey this morning (November 21). Emergency crews were called to Old Kent Road shortly before 7am amid reports a pedestrian had been hit by a car outside Dun Cow Surgery.

Upon arrival, they found a 34-year-old man with severe injures who later died at the scene. His family are now being supported by specialist officers, the Metropolitan Police said.

The person driving the car has been taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Their age and gender has not been made public.

One local resident described the scene as sounding “like an explosion”. A cordon remains in place from New Kent Road to Humphrey Street, with a forensics tent pictured at the junction with Dunton Road.

Drivers are being rerouted, causing congestion towards Tower Bridge Road and Elephant and Castle. There are also lengthy queues building along Peckham Park Road, Albany Road and past Burgess Park.

Transport for London has also placed nine bus routes on diversion.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “On Friday, 21 November at 06:55hrs police were called to the Old Kent Road, SE1 following reports of a road traffic collision between a car and a pedestrian. Met officers attended alongside paramedics from the London Ambulance Service who treated a 34-year-old man at the scene

“Sadly, despite their best efforts he died at the scene. His next of kin has been informed, they are currently being supported by specialist officers.

“An investigation has been launched into the circumstances and the driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.”

The London Ambulance Service added: “We were called at 6.57am today (21 November) to reports of a road traffic collision in Old Kent Road, Bermondsey. We sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene.

“We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance. The first paramedic arrived in less than five minutes. Sadly despite attempts to save his life, a man died at the scene.”
