Asda has recalled a type of cheese because of possible contamination with listeria.

The supermarket has pulled its own-brand Asda Extra Special Taleggio with the use by date of April 14, 2024. No other use by dates are affected by this recall. Symptoms of listeria poisoning include a high temperature, aches and pains, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

In babies and people with a weakened immune system, listeriosis can sometimes lead to serious and life-threatening problems such as sepsis or meningitis. If you’ve purchased one of these cheeses with the use by date of April 14, you can return it to your nearest store for a full refund.

You won’t need a receipt to get your money back. Asda said in a recall notice published online: “If you have purchased Asda ES Taleggio with date code 14-04-2024, please bring it back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund. You do not need your receipt. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you would like any further information, please contact: Asda Customer Relations – 0800 952 0101.”

It comes after rival supermarket Morrisons also recalled cheese because of listeria fears. The supermarket has pulled its The Best Taleggio, also with a use by date of April 14, as there is a “potential risk” that some packs may contain listeria. For all product recalls, you can check the Food Standards Agency and Chartered Trading Standards Institute websites. You should also notice recall notices in stores if they’ve pulled a product from shelves.

Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose have also issued recalls in recent weeks, and have urged customers who have bought the affected products to return them to their local store for a full refund. Some of the recall notices were down to potential allergen contamination – however, other products were at risk of containing glass and metal.
