The supermarket is going in a fresh direction
Asda is poised for a fresh makeover of its stores, with the recent refurbishment of its Harrogate branch offering a glimpse into how other supermarkets around the country could soon look. The revamped layout, featuring contemporary in-store signage, is set to become the model for other stores.
Gone are the traditional aisle-by-aisle signs, replaced by electronic signs over key sections, directing customers to the ‘Fruit and Veg’ or ‘Meat and Fish’ areas. One of the standout changes is the introduction of an entirely new department in the store, as envisioned by Asda’s Allan Leighton.
Shoppers can now find George Home and General Merchandise departments on the shop floor as the supermarket aims to ramp up sales of non-food items. This includes newly designed fixtures and space to showcase the supermarket’s partnerships, such as their collaboration with TV star Stacey Solomon.
The fruit and veg section has been enhanced with new cabinet fixtures to improve product availability on the shop floor. The beers, wines and spirits area has also been expanded, while the in-store bakery and health and beauty department have received a facelift.
The Harrogate store reopened its doors to shoppers this week. It’s the first of seven Asda branches set to benefit from a combined investment of £12million before 1 December, reports the Express.
Plans to revamp the Yorkshire-based store were unveiled in August. Next week, Asda is set to reopen its newly refurbished stores in Pudsey, Keighley and Kingswood, following a £7.2 million investment. The supermarket giant has also invested an additional £4.6 million in upgrading two stores in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, and Stockton-on-Tees.
Liz Evans, Asda’s Chief Commercial Officer for Retail and Non-Food, expressed her excitement: “We’re so excited to welcome customers into our newly upgraded Harrogate store – the first to get an upgrade as part of our £12m investment across Yorkshire and nearby areas.”
She added: “Asda started here 60 years ago, so putting money back into our home patch really means a lot to us. We want our stores to feel fresh, easy to shop, and full of great value for local families. This is just the start – we can’t wait to unveil more upgraded Yorkshire stores over the next few weeks.”
Last month, Asda launched nine new Express convenience stores as part of its strategy to expand its footprint in high-traffic urban areas, residential neighbourhoods, and transport hubs. Open from 6am to 11pm daily, each Express convenience store stocks over 3,000 branded and own-label products.
