As the weather warms up, the likelihood you’ll see ants in and around your home increases – but an expert has shared a cost-effective way to banish them for months
Ants can be really pesky, especially when you find them scuttling around your home – but there’s a cheap and easy way to banish them for months.
As the temperatures rise, so does the likelihood that you’ll spot ants around your property, but an expert has shared a way to keep the bugs at bay as temperatures soar.
John Stewart, a member of the technical team at Pelsis, has shed light on effective strategies to get rid of ants, admitting that they can be a “nuisance” as the weather gets warmer and “ants are more active”. He said that “preventative measures” will keep them away.
Stewart said it is important to eliminate potential entry points for ants, reports The Express. If you’re looking for natural deterrents, he suggested that you could try sprinkling cinnamon, cayenne pepper, or black pepper ” along ant trails and entry points”, as it can “disrupt their scent trails and discourage them from entering the home”.
Vinegar and lemon juice also work as cheap and effective methods to deter ants. Cinnamon can be purchased from Morrisons for £1, cayenne pepper can be purchased from Sainsbury’s for £1.10, and black pepper can be purchased from Asda for 99p. If you’re looking to try vinegar or lemon juice, vinegar can be bought from Tesco for just 35p, and four lemons from Asda cost 65p, meaning each lemon costs just 16p.
If this doesn’t work, he recommends using traps, saying: “Consider using Pelsis products like the Crawling Insect Trap, which is designed to attract and eliminate ants effectively.”
The traps cost £4 for a pack of three, meaning each one is £1.30, and the traps are effective for two months and can help you curb the infestation. They also only take minutes to set up, which is ideal.
If you don’t want the pests to return to your home, Stewart recommends you “Seal cracks, gaps, and crevices in walls, windows, and doors with silicone caulk or weather stripping”.
Additionally, you should look to clean “crumbs, spills and pet food residue” quickly, as if left, ants will be attracted to it. “Store food in airtight containers and promptly dispose of garbage to eliminate food sources for ants”, he added.
