Barclays has clarified the rules on customers getting access to their cash, particularly in circumstances when they might discover a sum added back to their accounts. The explanation followed a customer contacting the bank after encountering difficulties while making a withdrawal at one of its cashpoints.

They messaged Barclays via social media: “I want to know if a cash withdrawal was retaken by the ATM machine as I was stupidly distracted and didn’t take the money. Was it retaken or stolen by someone else?”

Barclays responded to reassure the customer that the cash would have been withdrawn by the cash point “after a short time”. The banking group also confirmed the sum should be returned to the individual’s balance, stating: “This should be also re-credited to your account.”

The Barclays website provides guidance about what occurs if you are a Barclays customer and you fail to collect all the cash you requested at a cash point. The guidance said: “Sometimes the cash machine – at home or abroad – will correct itself and return the funds to your account within 48 hours.

“We have to allow the cash machine owners this amount of time to return the funds to your account before we can take action.” Should the sum not be returned to your account, you can request a claim to be submitted to recover your funds at any Barclays branch, reports the Express.

You can also organise this by telephoning the bank on 0800 400 100, or if you are outside the UK, you can call +44 2476 842 099. You’ll need to get in touch with Barclays regardless of whether the cash machine was operated by another bank or financial institution.

The bank can take up to 12 working days to investigate your claim. Barclays stated on its website: “We’ll let you know how long it should take when your case is raised. If you’re successful, we’ll refund the money to your account.”

Barclays customers might also wish to be aware of the cash withdrawal limits that apply to their account, as these can differ. How much you can withdraw depends on what type of account you hold, the amount of funds you have available and whether you have an arranged overdraft. These are the limits that apply:

  • Personal current accounts (including Cash Card accounts) – up to £300 a day, but you can set your daily limit from £0 to £500
  • Premier – up to £1,000 a day, but you can set your daily limit from £0 to £2,000
  • Business – up to £750 a day (you can’t change this)
  • Cash card (youth) – up to £50 a day, but you can set your daily limit from £0 to £50.
