His son and daughter-in-law were ‘constantly at his side’ before his death
BBC and ITV broadcaster John Stapleton has died in hospital aged 79 it has been announced. Stapleton died this morning (Sunday, September 21) his agent confirmed while releasing a statement.
Stapleton was a familiar faces to TV audiences for decades through his work on major terrestrial channels with roles on programmes such as BBC’s Newsnight, Panorama, ITV’s Good Morning Britain (GMB) and GMTV’s News Hour. He was among Sky News’ original presenters.
Stapleton’s agent Jackie Gill said: “John had Parkinson’s disease which was complicated by pneumonia. His son Nick and daughter-in-law Lisa have been constantly at his side and John died peacefully in hospital this morning.”
Stapleton revealed his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease in October 2024. Appearing on ITV’s GMB after announcing his diagnosis, he said: “There’s no point in being miserable… It won’t ever change.
“I mean, Parkinson’s is here with me now for the rest of my life. Best I can do is try and control it and take the advice of all the experts.”
His death comes five years after his wife, fellow presenter Lynn Faulds Wood died aged 72 after suffering a stroke. She was best known for fronting the BBC consumer show Watchdog alongside Stapleton from 1985 to 1993.
Television presenter Mark Austin said the death of broadcaster John Stapleton was “incredibly sad”. Responding to the news in a post on X, Austin wrote: “Incredibly sad. A good man and top presenter who could turn his hand to anything. Best wishes to his family.”
