Valencia, which is the European Green Capital of 2024, has been named one of the most affordable destinations for hoppy drink enthusiasts by ferry operator DFDS

A sun-drenched Spanish city on the coast is one of the best places to go in Europe if you’re after cheap beer and beautiful weather.

Valencia is an exceptional place to visit if you enjoy lazing around on squares in the warmth, chinking glasses of cold, very cheap beer deep into the evening. The city has been named one of the most affordable destinations for hoppy drink enthusiasts by ferry operator DFDS, which compiled prices useful for those seeking to drown their sorrows on a budget.

In Valencia a half litre of beer will set you back just £1.72, which is less than half the amount you’d pay for the average UK beer. Beyond staple Irish bars Finnegans of Dublin and St Patrick’s, the city is full of genuinely excellent places to enjoy a rest and a drink after a hard day’s sightseeing.

Tyris on Tap is situated in the centre of the city and has a large outdoor seating area where punters can enjoy a variety of different ales, pale ales and lagers brewed in-house. Beers and Travel very much does what it says on the tin in a similarly central location, with a large list of beers from all over Europe provided to an international crowd in a rustic, relaxed space with bar snacks and a patio.

Another reason to go is that the city has 300 days of sunshine a year, according to Visit Valencia.

If ever there was a time to check out Valencia’s status as a cheap beer hub, then it may be now. The city has also been named the European Green Capital of 2024. For the next nine months Valencia will become a hub of environmental events thanks to its status, which it won due to its unique position and climate. The city is located in an enclave, facing the Mediterranean Sea and boasting some spectacular beaches. It’s also surrounded by orchards and stabilised by the atmosphere created by natural and protected areas such as the Albufera and the Turia Gardens.

At the moment a new Central Park is being built in the city, which will add 230,000m/sq of green spaces to the centre and completely transform the heart of a settlement of 800,000 people. Valencia has a rich biodiversity, which is reflected in its natural spaces, such as the Albufera Natural Park, the Valencian orchard and the Turia Gardens. The Orchard is an area 120km/sq big which stretches around the city, a stone’s throw from the urban hustle and bustle.

The Spanish Mediterranean port city also recently came out on top of a list of best coastal destinations, scoring very highly in a number of the categories in joint first place with Porto, Portugal. Quality of the beaches, seafronts and marinas; attractiveness; food and drink; and value for money were all put to the test, with Valencia seen as being particularly good value and having very nice beaches.

The city has a lot of strings to its bow, including a great food scene. There are plenty of old-style self-service restaurants, food stalls and fast food chains there, while street corner tapas bars are also worth a look. You can expect to pay £10 for a few small dishes.

Pricier restaurants stretch along the beachfront. For the best choice (and to watch the rich and wealthy), head to the southern end. Here the promenade is called Paseo Neptuno and is next to the luxury Las Arenas resort complex.
