Some weather maps suggest it could reach 24C in London early next month

This period of sunny weather is set to continue into October with the BBC predicting more than a week of straight sunshine. From September 27 until October 4 forecasters say the capital will experience either sunny weather or a mix sun and cloud.

We can also expect some milder weather, leaving the door open to a possible ‘Indian Summer’ at the start of October. Between now and next weekend temperatures are set to hover between 18C and 20C, according to the BBC.

Forecasters at WXCharts are even more optimistic. Current projections show the mercury reaching 23C on October 5, before climbing up to 24C the following day.

An Indian summer is typically classed as a warm, calm spell of weather that happens in autumn, especially in October and November. These high temperatures would not be the hottest October Indian summer ever recorded with that happening on October 1, 2011, in Gravesend, Kent, where temperatures rose to 29.9C.

The Met Office said “on balance” some rain, and potentially some strong winds are likely to affect at least the west of the UK. A west-east split was forecast to have wetter weather in western areas, although temperatures are expected to be above average around the country.

But the Met Office said from October 6 to October 20, that confidence is low about how weather regimes will affect the UK during that period. “On balance, slow-moving weather patterns are most favoured at first, possibly with high pressure centred to the west of the UK, and low pressure to the northeast, allowing a slightly cooler and more changeable flavour to the weather to develop,” it said.

“Towards mid-October a more unsettled pattern may become established as areas of low pressure over the North Atlantic move close to or over the UK, with an increased chance of windy conditions at times. Temperatures will probably recover to near-average.”

Will Hurricane Gabrielle hit the UK?

Meteorologists across Europe have been keeping an eye on Hurricane Gabrielle which is currently hurtling across the Atlantic. It formed less than a week ago in the tropical mid-Atlantic and is currently travelling from Bermuda to the Azores.

Gabrielle will weaken as it crosses cooler waters, but it still means parts of Europe in its path will experience severe weather. Predicting exactly when and where a hurricane will travel is difficult, according to BBC Weather, but forecasters predict it will hit Portugal on Sunday.

The UK should be spared any effects of Gabrielle with an area of high pressure keeping the country mostly dry.
