So many things claim to remove mould completely — I found one that really works
When it comes to banishing mould from your home, there’s a myriad of so-called solutions to sift through. With countless individuals swearing by various methods, how can you tell which ones genuinely work?
Some folks will assure you that there’s no need to splash out on expensive chemical cleaners because a simple kitchen ingredient can do the job. Others will champion different kitchen ingredients, asserting they’re just as effective. One writer splashed out £180 on a dehumidifier to rid her home of mould and was thoroughly chuffed with the results.
Sceptical of kitchen ingredients like baking soda or vinegar, and reluctant to fork out £180 on a dehumidifier to tackle the issue, I turned to a product that I’d heard others rave about.
Mould had begun to spread rapidly along the silicone sealant between the top of my bath and the wall tiles, as well as onto the frame of the shower screen. With four people residing in the house, including two young children, my bath and shower are in frequent use.
The bath is also brimming with children’s toys and in the past I’ve been horrified to discover some of them were smothered in mould. I was keen to prevent this mould from spreading to those toys again, so made its removal a priority.
My colleague had spotted people with similar mould issues raving about a mould-removing product on a Facebook cleaning group. Persuaded, she decided to give it a go and purchased it, subsequently praising it to her workmates.
Mould Magic can only be bought from Must Have Ideas and promises to eliminate mould within two to three hours. It costs £12.99 for two tubes. It makes the bold assertion that “it penetrates deep-down into the surface, eradicating all types of mould at the source so it cannot come back – ever – we guarantee it!”
Millie said she was “astounded” by the results, which prompted me to purchase Mould Magic to test it myself. She said it transformed her grouting from a yellow-orange shade to a brilliant white. She also mentioned it cleared the mould from her shower sealant and shower runner, which she described as “by far the most impressive transformation”.
Mould Magic is a transparent gel that can be used on silicone, grouting, walls, windows and even furnishings. Simply apply the gel directly from the tube, leave it for two to three hours before wiping away with a damp cloth. I actually left it on overnight as that was the only time I could guarantee in my house that the bath and shower wouldn’t be used.
It took me no more than two minutes to apply it to the areas I required and then I simply left it there. The following morning, I returned and wiped it away easily with a cloth. There was a powerful bleach-like odour but this quickly disappeared when it was cleaned off.
The results
I’ve used Mould Magic twice, but only documented the results on the second occasion. I followed the instructions on the packaging to a tee, applying the product to the mould, leaving it for several hours before wiping it off. The first time I used it, the results were astonishing. Even before I wiped it away, there was no sign of the mould – not even a tiny spot! I was astounded as nothing has ever eradicated mould like that before.
However, the fact that I had to use it a second time indicates that the product’s claim to permanently prevent mould doesn’t hold water, at least not in my home. I wasn’t bothered by this though – mould is notoriously hard to eliminate from bathrooms in UK homes which are often warm and damp inside, with windows frequently shut against the cold weather, hindering ventilation and promoting mould growth.
The second time I used it, while the results were satisfactory, they weren’t as impressive as the first time. It did manage to remove the vast majority of the mould effortlessly and transformed the appearance of my sealant (see the picture above).
But there were still a few tiny spots left. I suspect this might be because the product had thinned out a bit since I first opened it a few months ago. Nonetheless, I’m still immensely impressed with it and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone struggling with mould.
What other people say about Mould Magic
In an article for Good Housekeeping, Jasmine Vorley wrote: “Living in a damp-prone flat can feel like a constant battle against mould, so I was keen to see if this cleaner genuinely works. When I wiped away the gel, I was surprised to see the silicone seal and grout in my shower had been almost completely restored. The results weren’t as perfect as the ads might have suggested (are they ever? ) but they were still seriously impressive.”
Mumsnet users have also been singing its praises. One user shared: “It promises to get rid of it forever which it didn’t for me, but it did get rid of some really stubborn mould in my shower that nothing else would work on.”
Another chimed in: “It worked really well so I admit I was very impressed. Used it on silicon sealant and on grout.”
However, not everyone was convinced. Another user stated: “I’m not buying the hype to be honest. Whilst it removed some mould off the silicon sealant it turned most of it brown and I reapplied and left it overnight as suggested. It did clean up some bits of the grout, but was patchy in the results. I wouldn’t buy it again.”
