Lots of people order fish and chips when they head out for food – it’s a classic comfort dish after all. The only thing is, when we do opt for the British staple, we expect it to look a certain way

Fish and chips is one of the most popular British dishes of all time.

It’s comforting, familiar and – most of all – super tasty. That’s why so many of us tend to order it when we head out for a bite.

But one bloke was recently left perplexed when he opted for the staple meal when he dined out. He ordered fish and chips, but got handed food that looked rather ominous.

He endured such a dining blunder, he decided he had to open up about the matter on Reddit to get people’s take on the meal. Alongside a snap of the meal, he wrote: “I ordered ‘Fish & Chips’ from a local food court and this is what I received.”

In the picture you can clearly see the fish, but it doesn’t look like you’d expect. Instead of a chunky portion of fish coated in a crispy batter, he was handed five small portions of breaded fish alongside some crinkled chips.

It seemed to be covered in a very thin sauce with a dollop of mayonnaise (or something similar) on the side. If it was a traditional chippy tea you were after, you might want to look away now.

Over 10,000 people have so far shared their thoughts on the culinary chaos, and they can’t believe their eyes. Social media users were left in complete confusion as to what all the “wetness” actually is.

One person said: “It’s just brown and water.” Another added: “It looks like some sort of alien-arachnid snot. I think I’m gonna be ill.”

A third replied: “The chips, fair enough but who serves fish in gravy? Also, those fish nuggets look processed. They can’t even batter a fillet? And what is that splodge of mayo? Is that supposed to be tartar? 0/10.”

Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “I’d have sent that back. What a horrible mess.”

Among the debate, people discussed whether it was topped with gravy or another kind of sauce. Others also argued over whether the white stuff on the side was tartar sauce or mayonnaise.

A few also demanded to know where this dish was served, as they couldn’t believe it was a British offering of the much-loved dish. It has truly offended fish and chip lovers across the nation.

One person wrote: “I just need someone to quickly and swiftly reassure me that this didn’t happen in the UK… because oh my golly gosh. The white chips and the weird fish nuggets, the mayo looks like fascia and WHAT IS THE SLUDGE.”

Another chimed in with: “Yeaaa this food court is getting extradited to the UK for war crimes.” Meanwhile, one more replied: “I have seen some truly sad imitations of fish & chips from America over the years, but this is legitimately horrific.”
