A tragic incident occurred at a hotel in San Miguel de Abona, Tenerife, resulting in the drowning of a four-year-old British boy. Emergency services were alerted to José Miguel Galván Bello Avenue just before 5pm, following reports of a child in cardiac arrest. A lifeguard pulled the boy from the pool, but he was unresponsive.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed the incident, stating: “We are supporting the family of a British child who has died in Spain, and are in touch with the local authorities.”
According to The Sun, a nurse from the Canary Islands Emergency Service provided CPR instructions over the phone while responders searched for a defibrillator. Hotel guests, including some claiming to be doctors, attempted to assist.
Two advanced life support ambulances and a medical helicopter were deployed to the scene, reports the Express. Despite medical professionals performing advanced resuscitation techniques, they were unable to save the child’s life.
A tweet from the Canary Islands Emergency Service reported on the incident, stating that personnel from two ambulances, a medical helicopter, local police, and the Civil Guard intervened at the scene.
Telecinco reported: “A four-year-old boy died this Thursday after failing to recover from a cardiac arrest and having to be rescued from a hotel pool in San Miguel de Abona (Tenerife), according to the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (Cecoes) 112.”
They added: “Emergency services were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report that a minor had been rescued from a hotel pool by a lifeguard and was in cardiac arrest.”
112 Canarias announced on X: “A minor dies after being rescued from a hotel pool by a lifeguard in San Miguel, Tenerife. Personnel from two ambulances and a medical helicopter from SUC, the Local Police and @guardiacivil intervened at the scene.”
