A family has been left ’embarrassed’ after a groom and his new wife skipped their own wedding reception without telling them – but many support their sneaky behaviour
A stressed sibling has told of a furious family fallout after her brother and his new wife decided to skip their own wedding reception without telling anyone – leaving the family ‘embarrassed and blindsided.’ After detailing the events, she told how no one except one of the couple’s closest friends knew about their ‘devious’ party plan, with his ‘fuming’ family only finding out at the event.
While their brother and wife were supposed to be introduced to everyone at their wedding reception before photos were taken, their friend announced to guests that the newlyweds had left for their honeymoon instead, thanking everyone on the couple’s behalf for attending, before food and drinks were served.
She said: “The photographer had been sent home, apparently my brother and his wife did their photos before the ceremony. And took some with the few people who did know they were skipping the reception, including some of their friends and his wife’s dad and his wife. But no one else including anyone from my family.”

After admitting the family was ‘embarrassed’ she said: “My parents were angry. Their honeymoon was supposed to be in a few months. Apparently, they cancelled it two weeks ago and switched to a different honeymoon. They were already on their way to the airport and had left their mobile phones with their friend. He had them when my parents talked to him.”
However, the real reason for skipping their own reception soon became clear after it was revealed that their other brother and his pregnant girlfriend had planned to ‘hijack’ the couple getting hitched: “My other brother’s girlfriend is pregnant and they were going to announce it and that they want to get married at the reception. Only my parents had known. I didn’t even know.”
And after revealing someone had told their aunt and uncle about the plans, the news spread quickly around the other guests: “This upset my parents and my brother and his girlfriend. I know my brother and his wife don’t want to be parents themselves, but this seems extreme, over a pregnancy.”

After taking the tale to Reddit to see what others thought of the wedding day debacle, it was clear that most were on the bride and groom’s side: “The brother that was going to make his big announcement at his brother’s wedding is the one to be mad at. Also, I don’t know why everyone is so mad the married couple skipped the wedding. Everyone still experienced the free food and alcohol.”
Another reader agreed, commenting: “Anyone mad at the bride and groom are insane.” One took aim at the parents, saying: “You should blame your parents for being okay with your brother and brother’s girlfriend’s desire to steal the other brother and sister-in-laws day. A day that they spent a lot of money on to have and spent a lot of time planning. To be frank, I wouldn’t be surprised if they decide to go no contact with you guys.”
Many others agreed: “Good on them,” said one. “It’s their day, they still let everyone eat and drink who cares?” “The married couple did the right thing,” said another. “You, your other sibling and your parents wanted to hijack their day for other things without even asking for permission and then here you are coming crying to the internet. Shameful. Certainly well deserved embarrassment.”
