A busker captured the emotional moment he began singing a Lewis Capaldi track in public — only to be met with a deeply moving and unexpected response from a stranger
A busker set up to play some songs on a busy street and had no idea what impact he would have on someone’s day. Singer Sam Rendina filmed himself performing the hit Lewis Capaldi track Someone You Loved.
As he watched it back he was very moved by a man walking past who listened to the performance. Sam began passionately singing the lyrics when he noticed a man walking past who stopped to look at him. He carried on walking and then unexpectedly turned back towards the busker. The stranger put his bags down and faced Sam, fully paying attention to the poignant song.
Wiping his teary eyes, the man walked towards the street performer and handed him some cash, clearly emotional after having watched the performance.
He nodded at Sam and walked off, still crying as he was so touched by the song.
The singer shared the moving interaction on TikTok and the video has racked up 15.4million views, a million likes and more than 29,000 comments, at the time of writing.
In the caption of the post Sam reflected: “Watching this broke my heart.” Many viewers left compassionate comments.
One said: “That man needs the biggest hug.” A second guessed: “He remembers someone with that song.”
Another viewer added: “Some of us are really hurting silently.” Someone else commented: “We all have stuff in our lives that songs will hit our hearts. Be nice and help each other, we don’t know what the next is going though, hugs to this man, stay strong brother!”
A fifth viewer remarked: “When you’re happy, you enjoy the music but when you’re sad, the lyrics hit your emotion.”
Someone You Loved was Lewis Capaldi’s debut single, released in 2018 when he was just 22 years old. It remained at the top of the charts for weeks.
The heartfelt lyrics struck a chord with many listeners and Capaldi has been very honest to interviewers about the meaning behind the song.
In an interview with NME he said: “Over the course of making this album, for example, there were a couple of bereavements in my family and stuff like that, and I wanted to write a song that could be applicable to both my relationship ending, which I was writing a lot about, and then this bereavement thing.”
He wrote the song after experiencing two different heartbreaks – losing his grandmother and mourning the end of a romantic relationship.
The Scottish singer-songwriter told an Australian music channel that his grandmother had passed away a few years ago.
In the chorus of the sad song Capaldi sings: “I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved.”
