It’s meant to be the best day of your life – so why not do it twice? Charli XCX leads the charge as a wedding expert reveals why double weddings are becoming increasingly in vogue

As pictures circulated of Charli XCX sipping Aperol spritzes in Sicily ahead of her wedding celebration, it had some fans scratching their heads, asking: didn’t she already get married two months ago in Hackney? No, you’re not going crazy – it’s just part of the newest trend: double weddings.

Getting married twice may sound excessive (when it’s to the same person, at least) but it appears an increasing number of couples are opting for it. According to the Bridebook 2025 Engagement Report, 1 in 7 couples in the UK do not have their legal ceremony on the same day as their main celebration.

Unsurprisingly, many couples on TikTok have also been sharing their double wedding experiences, giving reasons such as being able to prioritise close family and friends, celebrating two different cultures, and simply extending the fun.

It can come down to aesthetics too. Content creator Kelsey Reads went viral after showcasing her two wedding ceremonies: one in a graveyard and one at Lake Como. She explained it was because both her and her husband have “two personalities”.

Even for those who are still opting for just one ceremony, these are becoming longer affairs, often featuring two-day or weekend-long celebrations. According to Bridebook research, over one third of Millennials (36%) and Gen Z (34%) are now planning weddings that span more than one day – with weekend or even longer celebrations becoming the new norm.

Hamish Shephard, Founder of Bridebook, believes that this shift towards prolonged celebrations is part of a desire to make the most of the moment in otherwise turbulent times. He says: “After years of disruption, the pandemic to the cost of living crisis and broader global uncertainty, couples are embracing the chance to gather loved ones for longer, more meaningful celebrations.

“From welcome dinners and garden parties to next-day brunches, the modern wedding is increasingly shaped as a multi-day affair designed to deepen connection and maximise joy.”

When it comes to a double wedding a la Charli XCX (splitting the legal ceremony from the main celebration), Hamish says the appeal comes from offering “greater flexibility in structuring their wedding around their values and budget.”

Hamish says: “Completing a simple registry office ceremony in advance allows them to explore a wider range of venues, including unlicensed spaces such as private gardens, family homes, or unique destination settings, and to take advantage of off-peak dates and midweek deals.”

He adds: “Not only can this significantly reduce costs, but it also offers couples the flexibility to host meaningful, personalised celebrations without the constraints of legal venue requirements or timings.”
