According to recent research, a Merseyside beach boasts the UK’s cheapest fish and chips. New Brighton in Wirral, offers the most budget-friendly fish and chips in the country, with an average price of £7.76.
The second cheapest fish and chips can be found in Southwold in the East of England, priced at £8.35. Portmeirion in Wales ranks third, where the seaside classic will set you back £8.57.
New Brighton also takes the crown for the cheapest chips alone, with a large portion averaging at £2.70. This is significantly cheaper than the priciest destination on the list, Plockton in Scotland, where a large chips costs a staggering £5.30.
The study, carried out by Capital on Tap, analysed 30 UK locations considering factors such as average shop ratings, average fish and chip prices, and these prices as a percentage of the average weekly salary in each area. The research identified the cheapest and most expensive fish and chips, as well as ‘affordability’ rankings based on local salaries.
In terms of affordability, New Brighton came in second, just behind Southwold, with fish and chips costing a mere 1.07% of a weekly wage, closely followed by Southwold. Portmeirion in Wales ranks third for affordability, with fish and chips costing 1.2% of the average weekly salary, at £8.57, reports the Manchester Evening News.
On the other end of the spectrum, Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire was named the priciest place for fish and chips, costing £14.73 which equates to 2.12% of an average weekly wage. Salcombe, a popular seaside holiday spot in Devon, ranks as the second most expensive location for fish and chips in the UK.
