Prince Harry is set to return to London next month to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games – and there is a sign that his wife Meghan could accompany him
Meghan Markle could accompany her husband Prince Harry when he returns to Britain next month, it has been claimed by a royal expert.
The Duke of Sussex is heading back to the UK to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, and he is due to give a speech to commemorate the event, which will take place at St Paul’s Cathedral at 5pm on May 8.
The Duchess of Sussex, meanwhile, has largely stayed away from the UK since the couple stepped down as senior royals in 2020. She did return to attend the Queen’s funeral in September 2022 – but Harry attended King Charles’s coronation by himself the following May, with Meghan and their two children, Archie, four, and Lilibet, two, choosing to remain in the US.
However, according to the Express, there is a chance she will be by Harry’s side for the Invictus celebrations.
Speaking about the St Paul’s event, an insider said: “The dates and details are being kept very hush-hush. Both Harry and Meghan are listed as guests and a speech has been scheduled, but there is still a question mark over whether Meghan will make an appearance. Her name has been pencilled in as a TBC (to be confirmed).”
Meghan’s appearance would certainly come as a surprise. It’s been revealed that Prince William and Princess Kate recently reached out to the Sussexes in an attempt to reconcile their two families. But it didn’t go to plan.
It’s no secret that the Sussexes have an incredibly strained relationship with the rest of the royals – fuelled further by their numerous public criticisms of its prominent members. But apparently William and Kate tried to extend an olive branch in order to see their young niece and nephew, Archie and Lilibet next month.
Harry and Meghan’s daughter, who will be three in June, has only been to the UK once in her life, and the Prince and Princess tried to encourage the Sussexes to travel with their children back to London. But Meghan refused, according to royal expert Tom Quinn.
He exclusively told the Mirror: “There is no way Meghan would bring the children to the UK. William and Kate have suggested that Meghan and Harry bring the children and that the two couples and their families try to make up, but the suggestion is not leading anywhere so far.”
Furthermore, it’s thought Meghan has no desire to return back to Britain. Richard Fitzwilliams told the Sun: “Meghan isn’t obviously keen on visiting Britain because she is not popular here. Nor is Harry, but it’s different for him. She’s asked for this.
“If she comes there will be a huge amount of adverse publicity because of the way she has acted for the past four years. On top of that you have the issue of Archie and Lilibet who are completely blameless.”
Mr Fitzwilliam further noted that the fact Harry recently lost his bid for more security could work in Meghan’s favour, hinting that she could use it as an “excuse” not to visit. And Endgame author Omid Scobie previously claimed that Meghan “never really felt at home” in London, and as such “never wants to step foot in England again”.
