A food storage expert has shared a ‘genius’ 2p hack to keep potatoes fresh for months, and it’s fair to say it’s pretty unusual – but people are saying it really works
According to the man behind Kitchen Tips Online, whose amassed more than 226,000 followers on YouTube, there’s a brilliant (albeit quirky) trick for keeping spuds fresh. Whilst his initial suggestion involves stashing potatoes in a cellar, countless British households simply don’t have such luxury space available.
If your kitchen represents the sole realistic storage option for potatoes, then there’s a “genius” technique for maintaining their freshness. The YouTube clip boasts that this “genius kitchen hack will keep your potatoes fresh and delicious for months”. “What I do,” he explained: “is use a cooking sheet with a rack”.

The video went on to detail how he places the unwashed potatoes alongside each other on the rack, reports the Express. He stressed: “Don’t wash the potatoes; don’t disrupt the skin of the potatoes, and definitely don’t put moisture on [them] before you store them.
“I take the potatoes and I distribute them equally on the sheet pan and I put it in a drawer in my kitchen.” He concluded: “There you go, folks, now you know the best way to store potatoes long-term in a kitchen if you don’t have a root cellar.”
Countless viewers praised the video, expressing gratitude for the potato storage tip and describing it as a “big help”. Tesco maintains that potatoes can remain fresh “for up to six months” when stored according to their guidelines.
Initially, potatoes require storage in a mesh or paper bag, positioned away from other fresh produce. They must be kept in a cool, dark place (below 10C) so a cupboard right next to the oven isn’t going to cut it.
