Nestled on the coast of west Wales is an ‘island’ that offers a serene and scenic coastal walk with an array of birds to spot and plant life to enjoy

Nestled on the west coast of the UK is a small ‘island’ with a beautiful route which takes you around the its entire coast in three-and-a-half hours.

Dinas Island isn’t an island at all. It is just partially detached from the mainland. Located on the west coast of Wales, the Pembrokeshire landmass is known for its birds which, in the winter, includes ravens, choughs, herring and greater and lesser backed gulls.

In the summer, visitors can expect to see razorbills, guillemots, fulmars and shag breed on the cliffs, which also acts as the perfect viewpoint over Needle Rock.

The landscape on the island is typical with coastal landscape; gorse, bracken and bramble cover the cliff tops creating a rugged but calming natural scene.

Dinas Island is also home to many coastal wildflowers including ling, scabious, thyme, heather, thrift, pennywort, foxglove and even orchids. Bluebells also fill the landscape in spring on the eastern slopes.

On the island is the remains of a church Cwm-yr-Edlwys, which was destroyed in the great storm of 1859.

From the northern tip of Dinas Head, where the cliffs are a staggering 465-feet above sea level, walkers can see the views of Cardigan Bay and Lleyn Peninsula of Anglesey. Perhaps, if you are there on a clear day, you will also spy the top of Snowdon and the Wicklow Mountains.

The shorter walk which takes three mils, will take you from one beach to another around the cliffs, which is one of Pembrokeshire’s most popular stretches of the National Park Coastal Footpath.

The island itself doesn’t have much other than fields, but it does have some holiday cottages, public toilets and — for after your exhausting walk — The Old Sailors pub.

If you choose to walk in land a bit, then you will find Dinas Cross where there is more places to eat including a five-star rated fish and chip shop and more accommodation. There is also Dinas Mountain which you can hike to and once at the top, offers panoramic views.

If hiking Dinas Mountain, you could end it with a visit to the Dyffryn Fernant Garden. Admission costs £7 per adult and you will get the chance to see and walk around a garden jam packed with vibrant plant life.

Exploring Dinas Island and the nearby area is a great day trip if staying in the nearby town of Fishguard.
