Separating the facts from fiction is notoriously difficult when it comes to skincare – but one simple fix could make all the difference.

Experts at Fresha, an international wellness marketplace, have analysed TikTok’s 100 most-watched beauty tutorials in a mission to identify the slip-ups we’re all guilty of in our daily routines. Surprisingly, 60% of influencers consistently made the same rookie error, which can even make them age faster.

This mistake was applying creams, ointments and oils to the skin too harshly, according to the Express. Albeit simple, rubbing your face with too much force can actually encourage swelling and more wrinkles over time.

And Fresha isn’t alone in believing this, with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) also urging people to cleanse their skin gently twice a day to look younger for longer. “Scrubbing your skin clean can irritate your skin,” experts at the association said.

“Irritating your skin accelerates skin aging. Gentle washing helps to remove pollution, makeup, and other substances without irritating your skin.”

Fresha’s research comes as countless social media users are turning to bizarre skincare rituals to prevent ageing. This even includes Jennifer Anniston, who recently confessed to using salmon sperm facials (also called PDRN) to keep wrinkles at bay.

But Fresha suggests there are far simpler solutions than this, unveiling two other common skincare faux pas. This primarily includes muddling up the order of product use and failing to care for the neck and chest.

Amid this, toner was said to be the most forgotten about when it comes to pampering, even though its crucial for restoring your skin’s natural pH and preparing it to absorb creams. This especially includes moisturiser which gives us a more youthful appearance by trapping water in the skin.

The AAD says it’s key to apply moisturiser at least once a day, everyday, and is even more beneficial if it contains SPF. “Whether spending a day at the beach or running errands, sun protection is essential,” experts at the AAD added.

“You can protect your skin by seeking shade, covering up with sun-protective clothing — such as a lightweight and long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection — and using sunscreen that is broad-spectrum, SPF 30 (or higher), and water-resistant. You should apply sunscreen every day to all skin that is not covered by clothing. For more effective protection, look for clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) label.”
