If oil stains from a vehicle has left your driveway looking unsightly, it can be tough to know what to do. Luckily, cleaning enthusiasts have shared a product which can lift the stains in hours

Whether it’s because your car is leaking oil, break fluid or power steering fluid, stains on your driveaway are never a good look.

Oil stains can be unsightly and hard to remove – and you’ll no doubt want to avoid using harsh chemicals where you can, so not to cause any damage to the surface of your driveway. Luckily, fans of online cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose real name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their go-to method for removing the tough marks. According to cleaning enthusiasts, the answer is a spray which only costs £1.20 in Tesco – Elbow Grease.

Sharing the hack on the Facebook group Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips, one woman asked: “Help. My son’s car dropped oil all over my block paved drive. What can I get it off with? Tried jet wash but did same.”

Many helpful cleaning enthusiasts shared their best tips, and many agreed Elbow Grease, which also costs £1.25 from Asda and Savers, and claims to be “the truly fantastic No 1 Degreaser for use all around the home”, was the best solution.

One social media user shared: “I used Elbow Grease spray and left it on and it worked great.”

Another added: “Elbow Grease spray. Leave to soak then pressure wash,” while a thid commented: “Spray Elbow Grease. Heavily scrub in and leave overnight. Pour over with warm water, spray heavily again, scrub, and jet wash. All mine came up.”

Previously, others have suggested washing up liquid can help shift tough stains. Explaining in detail how to use washing up liquid to clean up oil stains, one Facebook user said: “Use Dawn dish-washing liquid and a scrub brush. Give the grease spots a good squirt of Dawn, and scrub it in a circular motion to get it down into the ridges of the surface.

“Then put more Dawn on it and let it sit for about an hour. Then scrub it again, and rinse it off with the garden hose. If the spot is still there, do it again. If it’s really stubborn, sprinkle baking soda onto the grease spot along with the Dawn and scrub some more. The grease will come off eventually.”

Dawn is a US brand that can cost around £10 to have sent over to the UK via Amazon. However, you can achieve the same results with UK brands of washing up liquid such as Fairy, which is much cheaper at just £1 from supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s. If you want to try using supermarket brands, you can find the product for as little as 55p in Asda.
