Banana bread is a classic bake that’s perfect for using up overripe fruit, and this recipe is even healthier as it’s sweetened with bananas only – no sugar in sight

Sugar may be the go-to for sweet treats, but it’s not always a must-have, especially when it comes to banana bread.

So, if you’re looking for a healthy snack that’s going to fill you up, this is your recipe. Unless you’re not a fan of bananas. Traditional favourites like a classic Victoria sponge or gooey chocolate brownies might lean heavily on sugar for their signature taste, yet banana bread can easily do without. And the flavour is just as good.

Banana bread owes its moist texture and rich flavour to the star ingredient itself, much like carrot cake does to carrots, as Romina Bertinazz, author of ‘Yummy Little Belly’ and a dietician, points out in her cookbook.

Romina shares a healthier twist on the treat, noting: “These banana bread muffins are sweetened with bananas only…For best results and a naturally sweet flavour choose fully ripe bananas for this recipe.”

While there’s an option to toss in some dark chocolate for added indulgence, skipping it makes these banana bread muffins even more virtuous, reports the Express.

How to make a banana bread (with no sugar)

Method:

  • Whipping up these muffins is a breeze, taking just 10 minutes prep time with all ingredients combined in one big bowl. But first things first, pre-heat your oven up to 180C/160C fan/350F/Gas 4 and get a 12-hole muffin tin ready with liners.
  • Then, peel and break the bananas into the bowl, giving them a good mash with a fork. Chuck in the rest of the ingredients one by one, stirring well after each addition.
  • Once you’ve got a batter that’s smooth enough to pass for cake mix, spoon it evenly into the muffin cases. Pop the muffins into the oven for 18 to 20 minutes until they’ve turned a lovely golden colour and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Once baked, take the cakes out of the oven and allow them to cool down before serving. And voila, there you have it – the best banana bread with no added sugar, and just as delicious.
