As temperatures rise, many turn to the trusty fan to bring some much-needed relief into their homes. During a heatwave, every bit of cooling counts, yet despite their usefulness, it seems we’ve been using fans all wrong.

Sophmac26, a TikTok user, claims that instead of having our fans facing inwards, they should be set up to expel hot air from our rooms. She went viral after sharing her method on social media, leaving viewers astonished with this simple yet effective trick.

She advised: “What you do is open your window and face your fan outwards. It’s supposed to repel the hot air outwards, as opposed to just pushing the hot air around the room.”

She added: “My bedroom is usually the hottest room in the house at this time of night, and it actually feels so cool in here right now. It’s so much cooler than what it is normally.”

According to her post, she had the fan running for about three-and-a-half hours, which seemed ample to create a noticeable difference, reports the Express.

After stumbling upon the hack online, she decided to give it a shot – and it worked perfectly. Her TikTok video has garnered over 90,000 likes, astounding folks who are realising they’ve been using fans incorrectly for years.

While some were sceptical about its effectiveness, Soph was confident it would work, noting that she had found success with the method herself. It seems like people are ready to get inventive with their fan setups.

One TikTok user remarked: “Been doing this since I was a kid. Don’t know why people point it inwards – you want to get rid of the heat.” Another shared: “My husband was an industrial fan engineer. He tells the blokes at work to do this, but they refuse. It works.”

Someone else commented: “I have done this before, and it cools the whole room down in minutes. The fan sucks air from the back, so all the hot air in the room gets pushed outside.” A fourth added: “I do this for 10 years now. It’s almost a miracle.”
