A Croydon construction boss has been slapped with a £7,951 fine after fly tipping waste in the area. Muhammad Ali, 46, from Thornton Heath, pleaded guilty to the offence at Croydon Magistrates’ Court. In court he blamed his own inexperience as a renovator and his contractors who he claimed had agreed to properly dispose of the waste.

A local councillor discovered the waste from a renovation on the green between Pollards Hill West and Pollards Hill South in August 2023. Investigations led council officers to Mr Ali’s business on London Road.

He failed to provide details of how waste from the building works was taking place, leading to his conviction. Mr Ali was ordered to pay a fine of £890, the Council’s full costs of £6,705.71, and a victim surcharge of £356, totalling £7,951.71.

Croydon Council has reminded residents that anyone caught fly-tipping will be found and taken to court. Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, said: “Fly-tipping is a blight on our borough – it makes our streets look uncared for, it damages the environment, and it costs thousands of pounds in Council resources to clear. This court case shows that if you dump waste in Croydon, you will be held responsible and you will face the full weight of the law.

“Whether it’s abandoned cars, selling illegal tobacco products or fly-tipping, we won’t tolerate this behaviour in Croydon, and we will make those responsible pay for their actions.

“I take issues that damage Croydon seriously, and the Council is actively working to reduce these crimes, with several prosecutions planned over the coming months.”

Anyone who sees fly-tipping in Croydon is asked to report it through Love Clean Streets.
