Flash floods hit an area of South London on Thursday night (August 1), after thunderstorms and torrential rain rolled across the city. A video shared on social media has shown just how affected one area of the city was by the weather, with deep water covering a main road in New Addington.
The video, posted on Facebook by Nick Lindsay, shows people attempting to walk – or wade – down Central Parade. People can be seen moving through the water, which comes up to their waists in some cases.
Cars are also driving down the very flooded road, with water reaching up almost as high as the wing mirrors on some cars. People speaking in the video point out that it’s still raining and thundering while they’re filming.

They say: “Iceland is flooded well and truly, Greggs will be flooded, the betting shop, the off-licence, the chicken shop, everything along that bit is flooded.” Responses to the video emphasise just how bad and unusual the flood is.
One person wrote: “I’ve lived up here for over 60years and even when we had a bad winter in 63 and when all the snow melted it was never like this.” Several others shared that their homes had been flooded.
“Our living room was flooded no idea how it came in”, one resident said, while another added: “I couldn’t believe how flooded it was.” Others were so baffled by the depth of the flood they were questioning if the video was even real.
