The death of a ‘defenceless’ elderly man in Chiswick last year is now being treated as murder. John Murray was found unconscious at his home on Carlton Road on October 12, with his death attributed to a head injury.
Police have since learned the 75-year-old was assaulted following the results of a pathology examination. John’s family described the avid gardener as having “much more life to live”.
A statement released via the Metropolitan Police reads: “As a family, we are devastated and in complete shock to learn that our Dad and Grandad was murdered. We are struggling to comprehend why someone would harm a 75-year-old defenceless man in his own home. We are appealing for anyone with information to please come forward and help the police get justice for our family.”
John was said to be a well-liked and friendly face in Chiswick, having moved to the West London area after retiring. He was known for riding his motorbike and offering a helping hand to others.
Neighbours say he was last seen in the communal gardens on the day he died. Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, is hoping the public can put his killer behind bars.
He said: “Every piece of information, no matter how small, could be crucial. If you were in the Chiswick area, especially near Carlton Road on Saturday, 12 October, you may be able to assist our investigation.
“Did you see or hear anything unusual around Carlton Road, for instance, any signs of a struggle or an argument? Do you have any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from the surrounding areas at the time of the incident?
“You may simply know John, or visited him at his flat. You may have spoken to him or noticed a change in him in the weeks leading up to his death.”
Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact 101, quoting reference 5382/12Oct. Reports can also be made via the dedicated appeal page or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
