A skincare expert says that as we get older and evolve, our makeup techniques should evolve with us too – she has shared her top tips for making your face ‘pop’ and hiding wrinkles

A woman in her 60s – who looks years younger than her age – has shared her makeup secrets for aging skin.

Make-up lovers are inundated with social media posts every day telling us which products to buy and techniques to make our faces look flawless – but, not everything works for everyone. Some people spend years trying out different and new products to see which give you the most stunning look. Dr. Cynthia Bailey, 64, has shared her best methods to look young with a number of easy make-up tricks.

She says that tricks used on a 21-year-old face may not work for a 30, 40, or 50-year-old. Speaking on her blog, she said: “As you move into your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, you have the adventure of working to achieve a put together look with eyelid skin that sags and does not take makeup evenly, age spots that resist coverage and wrinkles that seem to gather powder into cracks and lines.

“Larger aspects of your facial structure have also changed. Our once heart shaped face is now squarer – what was up has now slid down.”

Cynthia said our make-up techniques should evolve as we do. Over the years she has learnt great tips from aestheticians, and credits YouTube as a great way of learning new tricks.

The dermatologist said as we get older, make-up no longer stays in place the way it may have used to. Bailey explained: “Makeup migrates during the day into the crepeyness of our skin texture. It goes into the fine wrinkles that have etched their way into our skin — like badges of honour marking our survival over the years.

“How do we keep from finding our makeup pooled in, and accentuating those little crevices by day’s end? Picking the right makeup products needs to take this into account.” She added: “Where do our eyebrows go? What happened to our rosy pink lips? For that matter, where did our cheeks go? Is applying a splash of blush good enough to bring them back or do we need a little more help?”

Demonstrating her techniques, the expert added a layer of Dr. Bailey’s Baked Mineral Powder all over her face to prevent product from pooling in her wrinkles. She also used the product on her lids to prep the upper lid skin for eyeshadow. “Just like painting, you prep your canvas,” said the dermatologist.

Speaking about how to perfect her eyebrows, she said that adopting thicker brows can create a more “youthful” look. She applied brow powder to her eyebrows and added a highlight under to make them “pop”.

When it comes to her eyelashes, the beauty lover says she uses an eyelash curler to start to get “lovely long lashes” before adding mascara. Underneath the eyes she uses a light colour to line her bottom lash line in order to make her eyes stand out. She says we loose eyelashes over the years so using these tricks can disguise any eyelash gaps or thinning.

To finish off her look, she used a lip liner and lipstick. Cynthia said: “Lip liners bind more tenaciously to lips than lipsticks, which tend to come off. To recreate the lip color and make it stay while I drink tea, I put this on first and then I put lipstick on top of that.

“As women age, we lose our lips. We lose our philtrum bow.”
