An ‘incompetent’ nurse blamed for a patient’s death took a second job at a London hospital while on sick leave, a tribunal has heard. Adekemi Adefidiya made serious errors while caring for a patient with motor neurone disease who was under palliative care at Thornbury Community Services in February 2019, leading to a police probe and accusations she contributed to their death.

Adefidya was never charged, but she continued working at Barts Health NHS Trust where it emerged she had worked nursing shifts at Homerton Hospital in Hackney, despite being on sick pay from Barts in October 2018. The trickster also tried to deceive a Barts colleague by sending them timesheets purporting to be from ‘ages ago’ that had not been paid, the tribunal heard.

The court also heard how Adefidya failed to work to the standards required in the intensive care unit at Barts. After failing to reach the standards, Adefidya was referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and given a final written warning for gross misconduct. Adefidya then took a job at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge without declaring the proceedings against her.

Royal Papworth only realised and sacked Adefidya in April 2020 once those misconduct proceedings were published by the NMC. Despite being under a conditions of practice order, Adefidya went on to work for Zentar Healthcare in August 2020, at St John and St Elizabeth Hospital, a private clinic near Regents Park, in September 2020, without declaring the order or conditions.

Deciding to strike Adefidya off the nursing register, the panel noted her four separate referrals from multiple workplaces, a lack of insight into her incompetence, and her steps to deflect and blame others. The panel also cited ‘premediated dishonesty for personal financial gain’ and ‘actual physical and emotional harm to patients’ as aggravating factors.
