In the current day and age of dating apps, it’s becoming harder and harder to have a pleasant and positive experience through the medium. However, Tinder is trying to change that, one app feature at a time.

Through its new update which launched on June 17, Tinder is attempting to transform the dating scene with its newest ‘Double Date’ feature, designed to help users and their friends dodge undesirable dates — and hopefully swipe their way into desirable ones.

The fresh feature allows users to team up with a mate to match with other duos, providing a fun and relaxed way to navigate dating together.

Whether you’re keen to meet new faces or simply enjoy the journey together with some friends, it’s a low-stress, group-centric approach to exploring the dating scene side-by-side — something that Gen-Z and millennials are keener than ever to experiment with.

Building on the success of features like ‘Tinder Matchmaker’ and ‘Share My Date’ – which allowed users to bring friends and family into their dating journey – ‘Double Date’ transforms the swiping experience into a shared, light-hearted adventure that can relished (or ridiculed) alongside a friend. It’s designed to make meeting new people more enjoyable, more social, and far less pressure-filled (gasp, are we still talking about dating apps?)

With Gen-Z and millennials increasingly dependent on friends to guide them in an evermore socially awkward environment, Tinder’s ‘Double Date’ function may serve as a welcome relief to alleviate those first-date jitters.

How does it work?

With the ‘Double Date’ function, a user can click the icon in the top right corner of the main card stack screen. They can then choose up to three friends to pair up with.

Next, all you need to do is scroll through your main card stack and like the Double Date pairs that catch your eye. Only one like per pair is required for a match to be made, at which point a group chat is automatically set up.

In the group chat, you can converse as a foursome — and if the chemistry is right — you can arrange to go on a date.

The best part?

With this new ‘Double Date’ feature, the post-date recap doesn’t have to wait — it can start as soon as the date ends. Tinder’s data reveals that during the testing phase of the ‘Double Date’ feature, women were three times more likely to ‘Like’ a pair than individual profiles.

Furthermore, match rates have significantly increased for those utilising this feature. The data also showed that individual users sent 35% more messages in ‘Double Date’ conversations compared to standard one-on-one chats. Because let’s be honest, everything is 10 times more fun with a friend.

The ‘Double Date’ feature is now available to Tinder users in the US and selected markets, with a global rollout scheduled for July. Perhaps it’s time to team up with a friend and prepare your joint swiping strategy?
