A certain component on vehicles that is usually only used during the summer months can quickly develop faults, leading to more serious problems, a vehicle financing comparison service has warned
Experts have urged drivers to check a specific component typically used in the summer for faults that can rapidly escalate.
As temperatures soar, many motorists will be flicking on their car’s air conditioning system to keep cool. However, as this feature is seldom used during the chillier months, problems can easily arise. A spokesperson from Carlease.co.uk, a vehicle financing comparison service, suggested that drivers should take a moment to ensure their air conditioning is functioning correctly, keeping an ear out for any odd sounds when it’s in operation.
They advised: “Traffic jams and sweltering cars can be a recipe for disaster if your air conditioning isn’t functioning properly. To avoid frustration, do regular checks and test the airflow within the vehicle by running the AC to its highest settings. Observe the type of air blowing out – is it weak or, even worse, hot? Listen for any unusual noises coming from your car’s AC system as it could be signs of problems such as a broken condenser or fan belt, which would require professional attention.”
In most instances, vehicles with air conditioning that doesn’t blow particularly cold simply need regassing, a service available at most garages for around £60, reports the Express. However, drivers who notice a rattling noise emanating from their air conditioning system should investigate further as soon as possible to prevent more serious issues from developing.
The rattling under the bonnet might just be a few loose screws, but it could also mean your belts are on their last legs. These belts aren’t just for show they keep other car parts running smoothly, so if you hear that rattle, get to a garage pronto before you’re left with a bigger problem.
As we bask in the occasional British summer sun, the spokesperson reminds drivers to check their wiper blades before the weather does a classic UK change. “It’s not unheard of to have the UK sun catapulted back to rain, wind and sometimes hail, even during summer,” they said. “Prepare your car for any weather and replace worn-out wiper blades to maintain optimal visibility during sudden downpours and glare from the sun.
“Check for signs of deterioration such as cracks or splits, and ensure the wiper blades are making full contact with the windshield.” Wiper blades can perish over time, losing their effectiveness and potentially scratching your windscreen. If you hear scraping or see streaks of water when they swipe, it’s time for new blades.
If a wiper blade needs changing, drivers will need to determine the correct type for their vehicle, usually by measuring the length of each blade. Wiper blades can be found online or in motor accessory shops, with prices generally starting from £5.
