A driving instructor has taken to TikTok to point out a simple mistake a learner made that resulted in an automatic fail on her driving test – and people are divided
A driving instructor has warned learners about a “simple” blunder that could lead to an instant fail in their driving test.
Richard from ‘R’ Drive School of Motoring, who regularly dishes out handy driving tips on TikTok, shared a video that’s gone viral with over two million views. The clip, titled “beware of this on your test” shows a learner driver navigating Commercial Road in Kettering when the instructor instructs them to “turn right” at the end of a one-way street.
As two lanes appear, marked for left and right turns, the learner mistakenly indicates right but positions the car in the left lane. The instructor asks in disbelief: “What have you gone and done? ” To which she responds: “Coasted the whole way?” Quickly, he corrects her by switching the indicator to left, advising her to turn left instead, and informs her: “You’ve just failed your driving test.”
He then retraces the route with her to highlight the missed clues, such as the one-way sign, road markings, and the direction the parked cars were facing, that should have prevented her from attempting to turn right from the left lane, reports Birmingham Live. One viewer praised the instructor in the comments, saying: “I love that he has taken her back round and explained everything, what great teaching.”
Another shared their own experience: “I was on a one-way road on my test and the examiner told me to turn right and then said ‘by the way this is a one-way road’, if she didn’t say that I wouldn’t have known.”
While some viewers debated whether it should be considered a fail, arguing “you can go the wrong way in your test”, Richard clarified that it was indeed a “serious fault” because it indicated a failure to observe road signs/markings. He elaborated: “Same fault if you stop in a box junction going ahead etc.”
