Those who claim a state pension may see their payment date change later this month.

There is another bank holiday on Monday, May 27. If you’re due a state pension payment on this date, you’ll likely find you get paid by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on the previous working day – so on Friday, May 24. If your payment date is changing, you won’t need to do anything – your state pension payment will just be automatically paid on the earlier date.

However, you will have a longer wait until your next state pension payment – so this means you’ll need to make your money stretch further than normal. The full new state pension is currently worth £221.20 a week and is normally paid every four weeks in arrears, while the full basic state pension is set at £169.50 a week.

You claim the new state pension if you’re a man born on or after April 6, 1951, or a woman born on or after April 6, 1953. Anyone born before these dates will be claiming the old basic state pension. A specific code in your National Insurance number should tell you the exact date you are normally paid your state pension.

You’ll need to look at the last two digits. If the digits are between 00 and 19, you are paid on a Monday. It is those who are normally paid on a Monday that will see their payments affected by the bank holiday.

You are normally paid on Tuesdays if they are between 20 and 39, and Wednesday if the digits are between 40 and 59. Numbers 60 to 79 are paid on a Thursday and numbers 80 to 99 are usually paid on Fridays. But it isn’t just the state pension that can be affected by bank holidays – payment dates for benefits such as Universal Credit and Tax Credits can also be changed around.
