An East London fire saw 20 fire engines and 125 firefighters being called to tackle the blaze at a shop in East Ham.
The incident took place on Thursday evening, May 30, at a retail unit on High Street North, with homes above the space also being affected by flames. London Fire Brigade (LFB) said that the street remained closed in the aftermath of the blaze being brought under control.
The force added that half of the ground floor of the building and a small part of the first floor were alight. Station Commander Darren McTernan attended the scene. He said: “Crews worked hard to bring this fire under control.”
He added: “Firefighters will remain on scene for several hours damping down hotspots. During this time, High Street North will remain closed.”
LFB reportedly used one of its 32-metre turntable ladders at the scene to help fight the fire from above.
Control officers from the Brigade took the first of 12 calls at 7.02pm and mobilised crews from East Ham, Plaistow, Stratford and surrounding fire stations to the scene.
Locals were told to avoid the area during the blaze as a precaution.
The fire had been significantly reduced shortly before 11.30pm and was said to be under control by 11.57pm.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
