Most folk are guilty of harbouring forgotten sauce jars lurking at the back of their fridges. Whether it’s homemade leftovers or shop-bought jarred sauces, it’s maddening to discover you’ve completely forgotten about something tucked away in your fridge.

Whilst certain foods might be safe to consume beyond their use-by dates, it’s likely best to bin items once they’ve begun developing mould. So what steps can you take to stop food from spoiling? Fortunately, one mum has revealed her favourite trick for storing pesto and other jarred sauces. The budget-friendly technique stops it from going off before she manages to finish it.

Posting on her Instagram page, savvy mum Casey Major-Bunce revealed to her 729,000 followers how they can copy the hack themselves. And apparently, it means you can keep pesto for months.

Casey said: “I hate food waste but what I hate even more is faffing around chopping garlic chilli and all those fiddly bits. These little jars are a dream but they only last about five days in the fridge… which is just rude really.”

She continued: “This is just a way to save them, just pop them into some parchment paper and freeze them. And you can literally grab and go when needed.”

In the clip, she’s shown using a spoon to spread out portion sizes of pesto onto a pre-cut square of parchment paper. She then layers these on top of one another, placing the pesto or tomato sauce between two sheets of paper.

Next, she puts her pile of papers into a large plastic bag and places them in the freezer.

Casey explained in her video caption: “So I cut them up pop them between sheets of baking paper (no fancy techniques here, just slap it down), layer them up and shove them in the freezer.”

A roll of baking paper costs roughly £2 – and you only require a tiny amount for this technique. So it’ll set you back just pennies to preserve your pesto for longer.

Casey continued: “They’ll last for six months also that baking paper is also biodegradable so it’s a win win.”

Viewers were stunned by the straightforward yet brilliant trick – and numerous people flocked to the comments section to voice their opinions.

“This is so useful,” one viewer commented, while another user said: “This is amazing! Sometimes I never use all jar in time.”

Someone else also revealed their own take on the method, as they wrote: “I freeze the jar and just spoon out as much as I need. It’s quite easy even when frozen due to the amount of oil in the contents.”

Meanwhile, another person suggested: “Stick in ice cube trays. Saves you using parchment paper and plastic bags.”
