Elon Musk has boldly claimed there will be a human city on Mars within the next 30 years.

The SpaceX founder has made several claims on X – of which he is also the owner and CEO – regarding space travel and habitation. Responding to an X user who declared that “we are just a few years away from landing on Mars”, 52-year old Musk penned: “Less than 5 years for uncrewed, less than 10 to land people, maybe a city in 20 years, but for sure in 30, civilization secured.”

Founded in 2002, Musk’s SpaceX became the first private company to develop a liquid-propellant rocket to reach orbit and the first to send a spacecraft and astronauts to the International Space Station. A year earlier, he had announced the development of Mars Oasis – a project bidding to land a greenhouse and grow plants on Mars.

Scores of Musk’s 183million followers were excited by his latest claims, with one commenting: “Unimaginable for so many…. Hoping I’ll live another 10 years just to see the advancement.” Another penned: “Between AI, VR and now Mars? I didn’t expect any of them to happen in my lifetime. It’s pretty incredible.” A third wrote: “Wow! Impressive. I likely won’t be here for 30 but I’ll be watching from the next life!!” And a fourth said: “Most of us will experience these goals achieved. That’s exciting.”

It comes after Musk outlined plans to extend consciousness to Mars as he prepares to launch more satellites into space. Ahead of the latest launch of a Falcon 9 rocket on Tuesday (May 14), he wrote: “SpaceX’s mission is to extend consciousness to Mars and then the stars.”

Musk has made no secret of his fascination with space exploration. Earlier this year he successfully launched his £2.4billion SpaceX Starship, congratulating the team on their launch of the “largest flying object ever made”.

The SpaceX boss wrote: “Starship reached orbital velocity! Congratulations @SpaceX team!!”. He then added: “At ~5000 tons, Starship is the largest flying object ever made.”

Musk also reposted Steve Jurvetson, board member of X, who said: ”Starships are meant to fly… An incredible launch this morning, with 33 Raptor engines breathing fire, hot staging over the Gulf of Mexico, boost back to the ocean, good upper stage burn, and test of the Pez bay door. Starship engine relight and reentry to splashdown to come.”
