A major road in Bromley is set to close for “emergency demolition work” over the weekend. Croydon Road in Penge will be shut while the council prepares to demolish buildings which have become unstable, threatening public safety.

Locals were evacuated from the Mitre Pub last year after the structure became unstable during building work. Since then further cracking and instability has been noticed in adjacent buildings, prompting the council to take action to demolish the buildings.

Croydon Road will be closed, including bus stops, while the work takes place from Thursday, June 12 at 8pm until Saturday, June 14 at 6pm between Samos Road and Weighton Road.

Three local bus stops will be closed for the duration of the entire demolition work, with Tremaine Road at the junction of Croydon Road also closed for the duration of the demolition work, which could take around three weeks.

The closure will allow the area to be prepared for the emergency demolition work which is due to start next week. Initial hoarding work will be undertaken to ensure the wider area remains as safe as possible during the demolition work.

It is anticipated that Croydon Road will partially reopen on Saturday evening, from 8pm. Temporary traffic lights will control traffic for the remainder of the demolition work, with the width of the road reduced given the scale of the hoarding work. A temporary crossing facility will also be in place to help pedestrians cross the road.

A Bromley Council spokesperson said, “This demolition work is an absolute last resort, with our structural engineers advising that the building has become even more unstable and is now dangerous. The road is closed to allow for preparation work, with a hoarding being erected around the building, with demolition work then getting underway.

“Croydon Road will partially re-open once the hoarding is constructed and only fully re-open once the demolition work is complete. We apologise for any inconvenience, with this work unavoidable from a safety perspective.”
