Mr Motivator re-energises workers out of afternoon slump
The average office worker experiences an energy slump at 2:12pm, a study reveals.
A survey of 1,000 employees discovered that productivity takes a significant nosedive in the afternoon for 65% of workers. Top reasons for this include being seated in one place – at the desk – all day (35%) and finding the working day generally too long (29%).
Other factors such as a heavy lunch (23%), poor sleep the previous night (27%) and intense work during the earlier hours (19%) also contribute to the slump. Lack of physical activity (18%) and caffeine (14%) were additional reasons for a decrease in productivity.
Many resort to various methods to combat their lull, including stepping away from their desk (45%), stretching (27%) and listening to music (23%). Other techniques to overcome the afternoon slump included listening to motivational podcasts (10%), consuming a caffeinated drink (32%) and even indulging in a power nap (13%).
The research was commissioned by Emmi CAFFE LATTE, who have partnered with Mr Motivator, to help energise workers out of their slump and turn their day into a successful one.
Dressed in his iconic bright Lycra, the 71-year-old, whose real name is Derrick Evans, guided workers at Manchester’s Media City through 15 minutes of movement to music.
Mr Motivator stated: “We start the day with the best of intentions, but sitting behind a desk all day can be a real challenge. It’s super important to get moving whenever we can -big or small, every bit counts.”
“It’ll boost your health, your mood, and most importantly, your motivation. Office workers, you’re my perfect crowd for a pick-me-up, especially after lunch when that energy dip hits hardest.”
“So, get up from that desk, shake it out with some easy stretches or a brisk walk outside in the fresh air you’ll feel fantastic during and afterwards!”
A significant 63% of those surveyed, via OnePoll.com, agreed that the afternoon slump is indeed a real phenomenon. As many as 34% tend to postpone any unfinished work until the next day when they hit their lull, demonstrating the impact on productivity.
A spokesperson for Emmi CAFFE LATTE said: “Mr Motivator is the perfect person to inspire the nation. We’re eager to applaud the nation’s accomplishments, no matter how big or small, and this serotonin-boosting workout evidently helped people shake off their slump and complete their tasks.”
“The research highlights how diet, lack of exercise and poor sleep can affect the level of motivation people have during the workday and we’re all too familiar with that afternoon dip.”
“Typical ways to wake up from that slump include stepping away from the desk and having a quick stretch, but what better way to get moving than a visit from Mr Motivator himself.”
