‘Entitled stranger drove past my house and made outrageous demand’

A homeowner was left ‘baffled’ after a stranger came up to them with an unusual request while they were sitting on their porch one day last summer, and it was so strange that they still think about it

Your home and areas surrounding the property, like your garden and driveway, are places you want to be able to relax and feel comfortable. This can sometimes be made tricky by difficult neighbours or visitors on your street.

Most people don’t stop on a residential street unless they’re visiting someone who lives there or they have a job to do, such as making a delivery. No one wants to be disturbed when they’re trying to chill out at home unless it’s for a good reason. However, one person recalled a time last summer when an “entitled lady” wanted to use their garden for a yard sale.

In a post on Reddit, the user explained that they were sitting on their front porch when a lady drove up and stopped outside their house.

They said: “This just happened last summer. I’m still just kinda baffled. I was sitting in a chair on my front porch playing on my phone and a lady drove up.

“Never seen her or her car before. It was like a bright teal colour, not something you normally see so I’d have remembered if it drove by often.”

They looked up and said: “Hello?” to which the woman responded: “I wanna ask you something.” They said they were “annoyed” but let her ask her question.

The woman gave a “weird look” and waved her hand around and added: “I don’t wanna ask this from far away.”

The person added in their Reddit post: “Now red flags are going off, I’m like there’s 0 chance in h*** I’m getting up and walking over to this strange lady’s car, so I tell her she’s free to get out of her car and get a little closer.

“Doesn’t seem super happy but she does and just stands behind her car so really not any closer than she was to begin with.”

The lady then asked the homeowner if their street “has a lot of traffic” and they told her that it has “a good bit,” thinking the woman was worried about their car being parked in the middle of the road. However, this wasn’t the case.

They continued their Reddit post: “Her next words really baffled me: ‘I’m looking for someone to let me use their yard to have a yard sale.’

“I immediately just said, ‘No, not here.’ Everything about this lady had already rubbed me the wrong way, there was no way I was letting her use my property for hours.”

The woman was “flabbergasted” and struggled to take no for an answer. The person simply repeated: “Yeah no, not here.” In response, the woman called them “rude” as well as a “bunch of other stuff” they didn’t hear as she said them “under her breath while getting back in her car in a huff and driving away.”

The Reddit user concluded: “And I’m just sitting there like why? There’s also an empty field literally at the corner of my street so just no lady, you aren’t entitled to use my yard for your sale.”

More than 100 comments have been left on the post with others being supportive of how the user reacted to the “entitled lady.”

The top comment reads: “That was gutsy. Asking to hold your yard sale in a stranger’s yard. Me thinks she [is] up to something fishy, and wants to leave you holding the bag.”

Someone else added: “Definitely something was off. Sure, it’s easy to imagine someone lives in an apartment where she can’t hold a yard sale…or maybe, given that she asked about traffic, lives on a tiny side street or dead end.

“But it’s difficult to believe she has NO friends or relatives with yards she could use, not even a single person, so that she needs to be driving around asking random strangers.”
